Trace Compounds in the Environment

State of the art analytical methods are required to determine the occurrence and fate of trace organic compounds (TrOCs) in the environment and also for the evaluation of water and wastewater treatment. This is achieved by coupling chromatography (RPLC, RPCL-HILIC) and mass spectrometry (MS/MS, ToF-MS).

To achieve a more holistic risk evaluation and risk assessment, rather than assessing only the presence of known TrOCs, we also focus on the simultaneous determination of TrOCs and toxicological endpoints. This so called effect-directed analysis (EDA) allows an enhanced evaluation of water treatment processes and to identify effect causing TrOCs. This will also help to assess and evaluate metabolites and transformation products formed during biological and oxidative processes.

Another focus of the group is the investigation of the sorption of TrOCs onto microplastic particles, using a new analytical approach (TD-Pyrolysis-GC/MS). Here, we focus on smallest particles (<1 µm) due to their high mobility and assumed high toxicological potential.

In the future we want to focus on the identification and determination of persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs), which can hardly be assessed at the moment. Hence, new separation and coupling techniques as well as enrichment procedures will be investigated.
