Energy-Efficient Wastewater Treatment

Reliable treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater for safe discharge to the receiving environment remains the main goal of wastewater treatment. However, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the major municipal energy consumers, while only little energy is recovered (mainly as methane). While developing new approaches, energy recovery from various wastewater streams is one focus of our activities.

We consider wastewater as a resource which can assist in converting WWTPs into “energy autarchies”. Besides increasing methane yield, innovative energy-saving treatment techniques targeting the recovery of valuable products are developed and tested at lab- and pilot-scale. One approach is the so-called CANDO process, which allows the production of nitrous oxide from ammonia-rich reject water. The process has been developed by collaborators at Stanford University. While economic aspects play an important role, potential threats to the environment (for instance by the emission of greenhouse gases) are also considered.

The addition of co-substrates (e.g. food waste) to increase biogas yields in digesters of municipal WWTPs is another focus of our group since these facilities often have excess treatment capacities. In addition, the effects on process stability and biogas yield are another focus. Through several studies, we could demonstrate that methane yield in practice can be higher than during batch tests suggesting unutilized synergies and indicating the great potential for co-digestion; besides existing challenges.

An additional focus of the research group is the development of different approaches for sewage sludge pre-treatment (e.g. ultra-sonic) and the effects on the anaerobic digestibility as well as sludge characteristics, such as viscosity and dewaterability. Based on promising results at lab- and bench-scale, a new research project was proposed to test this technology at a full-scale WWTP. In contrast to the technique available, the new ultrasonic system is utilizing a pipe reactor, which is much easier to maintain.
